Biography

Alix Surette was born in 1994 and grew up in Miramichi, New Brunswick. Ever since she was young, her favourite toys were the empty boxes she found around her house. Building cereal box dollhouses sparked her creativity and her love of art. She got her first camera when she was fourteen years old and constantly took pictures of anything and everything around her. As she approached the end of high school, Alix was unsure which university she wanted to attend. She then discovered the Applied Arts program at the University of New Brunswick and the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, where she could pursue a passion of hers.

In 2016 Surette graduated from the four-year Bachelor of Applied Arts program between UNB and NBCCD.  She is currently in her third year at NBCCD majoring in photography. After she graduates from her program in May of 2017 she will have a Bachelors of Applied Arts Degree and a Diploma in Photography.

A couple of years ago, Alix stumbled upon the work of fashion photographer Arthur Elgort, which completely changed the way she had previously viewed photography. Before seeing Elgort’s work, Alix focused mainly on taking macro photos, completely avoiding photographing people; however, his work inspired her to go beyond her comfort zone to do something she thought she did not like. She looks forward to the next last year at NBCCD as she builds her portfolio and skills in her field.
